About the Author

William Shepard completed his Ph.D. degree in The Comparative Study of Religion at Harvard in 1973 with a dissertation on the modern Egyptian scholar and writer, Ahmad Amin. He taught in the Department of Religion at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, for several years and then moved to New Zealand and taught in the Religious Studies program at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch from 1978 until he retired in 1999. He has travelled in the Muslim world and elsewhere and lived for a year each in Brazil and Egypt. His primary interest is modern Islamic ideologies. He has published a book on Ahmad Amin and several translations of the writings of the radical Islamist, Sayyid Qutb, as well as a number of articles. He is also an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church.
